What is a rheumatologist?

A rheumatologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating autoimmune and inflammatory conditions — diseases where the immune system attacks healthy tissue, causing joint pain, swelling, fatigue, and sometimes organ damage.

You may have been referred to a rheumatologist because your symptoms, blood work, or imaging suggest a condition that requires specialty evaluation. Common reasons include persistent joint pain, unexplained fatigue with stiffness, a positive ANA test, or elevated inflammatory markers. Learn more from the NIH autoimmune diseases overview or the American College of Rheumatology patient guide.

When to see a rheumatologist

  • Joint pain, swelling, or stiffness lasting more than six weeks
  • Morning stiffness that takes more than 30 minutes to improve
  • Unexplained fatigue combined with joint or muscle symptoms
  • A positive ANA test or elevated ESR or CRP on blood work
  • A family history of autoimmune disease alongside new symptoms
  • Symptoms your primary care doctor suspects may be autoimmune in nature

Care that starts with listening

Every treatment plan begins with understanding your symptoms, history, concerns, and goals. We work to make each visit more informative, more personal, and easier to navigate from diagnosis through follow-up.

  • We explain your diagnosis in terms that make sense — not just what it is, but what it means for your daily life
  • Follow-up visits are structured so you have time to ask questions and adjust your treatment plan
  • Each care plan reflects your specific symptoms, goals, and response to treatment — not a one-size-fits-all approach
